Night Owl is a former producing uranium mine in the Shirley Basin, mined at surface with a backhoe by Night Owl Properties and Battle Axe Mining in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It produced 93 tons at a grade of 0.24% U3O8 under contract to the Atomic Energy Commission, and production stopped when the uranium price fell to $7, not because the resource ran out. Mineralization sits in a brecciated zone beneath the contact between Shirley Basin sediments and the Madison limestone below. Surface samples returned uranium concentrations between 0.189% and 0.326%, though drilling to date has not found abundant mineralization down hole.
